My Matsumoto City Japan trip was one of the calmest parts of my journey. Located in Nagano Prefecture, this charming city blends ancient architecture with mountain beauty. I spent the day walking around Matsumoto Castle, exploring its peaceful streets, and soaking in the town’s artistic energy.
On the way to Matsumoto

Journey from Takayama to Matsumoto
We started our morning early in Takayama, catching the Nohi Bus at 07:50 AM. The ride was smooth and scenic, taking about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and by 10:23 AM, we arrived in Matsumoto.
Our hotel, Richmond Hotel Matsumoto, was just 400 meters from the station, so we walked there and kept our luggage before setting out to explore the city.

My Matsumoto City Japan Experience
My visit to Matsumoto City Japan was full of calm moments. I loved how the city preserved its old architecture while embracing art and culture. It’s small enough to explore on foot, yet rich in stories.

Lunch at Mensho sakura – Must Try Ramen Here
By lunchtime, we headed to the popular ramen restaurant “Mensho Sakura.” It was already quite busy, with people queuing outside—a good sign! The ramen was absolutely delicious, and we were pleasantly surprised to find they also offered vegetarian ramen, which was flavorful and satisfying.

Exploring Matsumoto City
Our first stop was the charming Nawate Street, a small historical shopping lane lined with quirky shops and frog-themed decorations. The atmosphere was lively, with the smell of street snacks filling the air and locals strolling about.

Walking Through Nakamachi Street & Local Markets
Nakamachi Street was charming, filled with traditional kura storehouses, souvenir shops, and cozy coffee spots. The local market offered handmade crafts and friendly smiles.

Exploring Matsumoto Castle – The Iconic Crow Castle
After lunch, we walked to the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most beautiful and well-preserved castles. The black-and-white structure looked stunning against the blue sky, surrounded by a moat and autumn leaves just beginning to change color. We spent some time exploring the grounds and taking photos before heading back to the hotel.

Cultural Charm and Hidden Corners of Matsumoto
Matsumoto also has a creative side – art galleries, street murals, and music events pop up around town. It’s the kind of place where you slow down and truly observe Japanese daily life.
