15th December 2018 / We visited Negombo on the way to Kandy and visited Negombo Fish Market & Negombo Churches & Sightseeing.

Negombo Fish Market

The Negombo Fish Market is fresh, literally, on the beach shore. The endless rows of dried fish against the Negombo sky make a startling sight. Crowds of fishermen are seen untangling their fishing nets, playing with their kids, and stretching out miles of fish to dry in the sun on Negombo’s shore. Just drink coconut water and enjoy !!!

Negombo Sightseeing

Just walk around some temple, churches and road side sightseeing.

Negombo is a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka, north of the capital, Colombo. Near the waterfront, the remains of the 17th-century Dutch Fort now house a prison. Negombo Lagoon, lined with fishermen’s huts, feeds into the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal. The canal leads south to Colombo. Neoclassical St. Mary’s Church, completed in the 1920s, features a ceiling decorated with vivid religious paintings.

My Walking Story :

Today I am going to tell you about my day three at Negombo in Sri Lanka (15^th Dec’18) which is out of Colombo. But before that I would like to remind you one thing, as before I started this trip on the second day, I went in the evening to meet and talk to my travel tourism partner to help me out with a car along with the driver for my 3-4 days trip. He helps me with that and booked hotels for me for my listed destinations for which I have already did the advance payment.

The next morning, we did our breakfast and completed our check-out formalities, while the driver reaches on time, while our plan was to travel along with distances and the name of the place was Kandy. Kandy was a popular place that takes around three-four hours of traveling, while we move ahead in our car. Stepping out of the city, the first city which came was Negombo on our way to Kandy, there is a big Fish Market.

Negombo was the place where the bomb blast took place in the past in the same city near the church side. The bomb blast happens in the same hotel in which we were staying but, in another branch, as they possess two three branches of the hotel. Still, there was a feeling of peace in the city after that huge terrifying blast and I wish the thing would remain good and safe.

We went into the Fish Market as it was a famous place over there. The Negombo Fish Market is a fresh fish market, literally, on the beach shore. The endless rows of dried fish against the Negombo sky make a startling sight. Crowds of fishermen are seen untangling their fishing nets, playing with their kids, and stretching out miles of fish to dry in the sun on Negombo’s shore. I saw the bulk of fresh fishes with varieties and the place was full of fish smell.

I took a photo with local people over there and of the place as well. Check the pictures on my blog, they were also selling cashew nuts which I purchase from there. People visit to buy fresh fish from here. While the fish market is deserving a visit, simply to see the fresh fish for sale, also on the beach close to the fish market you can see all the tuna, sardines, squid, etc… being salted plus left in the sun to dry.

I also enjoyed the coconut water, love to have it as it keeps me hydrated plus active during my trip. I had a click picture of it and you can see their coconuts were yellow in color, while had some good funny conversations with the local people. I spend around an hour in the Fish Market and its surrounding place which includes eating food and relaxing. Further moving ahead on our way, we got to see one church and a temple.

There were several beautiful churches available and we stop at one of the names St. Mary’s Church, it is one of the more generous cathedrals in Sri Lanka. Acknowledging that the population of Negombo is 99% Roman Catholic it arrives as no surprise that it is quite a significant building in the city. The design is majestic plus the church has some excellent paintings. It is recognized as Mahaweediya Palliya in the Sinhala language also is quite effortless to find. Negombo is a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka, north of the capital, Colombo.

I perform my prayers and click pictures of the church and move ahead. We also came across a temple name Angurukaamulla Temple, the largest Buddhist tourists would enjoy visiting the Angurukaamulla temple. Established near Harishchandra College, the temple possesses a giant Buddha image. There are also plenty of old paintings plus murals open for your perusal. In case you are curious about the kings of Sri Lanka from a past era, you will get a lot of knowledge about them at this temple. We explore the temple and move ahead on our route.

The Negombo lagoon is not only breathtakingly lovely but it also serves as a perfect playground for water sports lovers. Windsurfing, surfing, scuba diving, rafting plus boat rides. Negombo is, in anyways, totally opposite to the hustle plus bustle of Colombo and that’s a moderately laid-back town, including almost isolated beaches. Meanwhile Negombo, you can let your hair down also watch the world go by. I like to explore this place and the way local people follow their daily routine work and still smiling no matter how hard life gets on, it was inspiring for me too. Thank you!
