The moment we landed in Nagoya, our hearts felt light — like the start of a new chapter. After months of planning our nine-day Japan route (Bangkok → Nagoya → Gero Onsen → Takayama → Shirakawago → Matsumoto → Kamikochi → Tokyo → Mount Fuji → Bangkok), we were finally here. Nagoya would be our first real taste of Japan’s balance between tradition and modern life.

My Nagoya Travel Experience

My Nagoya travel experience was peaceful and fascinating. The city has a relaxed vibe compared to Tokyo, but it’s equally rich in history and culture.

Lunch at Atsuta Horaiken – First Taste of Nagoya

Hunger soon led us to one of Nagoya’s most iconic dining spots — Atsuta Horaiken Main Restaurant, home of the famous Hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice).
The restaurant was traditional and calm, with a scent of charcoal and soy glaze drifting through the air. The moment we tasted our first bite — tender eel brushed with sweet-savory sauce — we knew Japanese cuisine was something special.

After the meal, we wandered around the small park nearby, soaking in the gentle afternoon light and capturing our first travel photos together in Japan. The trees, the serenity, and the sound of the wind created the perfect memory snapshot.

Atsuta Port

The story of Atsuta Port is the early history of the modern Port of Nagoya, one of Japan’s most vital maritime hubs. Before extensive land reclamation, Atsuta was the site of Miya-juku, a crucial port town that thrived on trade and transportation for centuries.

Evening at Nagoya Castle

With our energy restored, we made our way to Nagoya Castle, the city’s crown jewel.
The towering keep stood proudly against the blue sky, adorned with golden shachihoko — mythical tiger-headed carp that symbolized protection. Inside, we admired the intricate wood carvings and traditional paintings that told centuries of stories.

The castle gardens were peaceful, filled with maple trees and flowers. We spent time taking photos and just enjoying the atmosphere, imagining what life must have been like here in the Edo period.
