Day 5 – Visited Forest Research Institute & Dehradun Memories : India (Oct’24)
In October 2024, I had the opportunity to visit the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, India. Established in 1906, FRI is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious institutions dedicated to forestry research and education.
Exploring the Campus
The FRI campus spans over 500 hectares and is renowned for its Greco-Roman and Colonial architecture, particularly the main building completed in 1929. This architectural marvel stands as a testament to India’s rich colonial heritage and is a major tourist attraction in Dehradun.
Walking through the expansive grounds, I was captivated by the lush greenery and the serene environment. The institute houses several museums, each dedicated to different facets of forestry, including the Pathology Museum, Timber Museum, and Non-Wood Forest Products Museum. These exhibits offer deep insights into India’s forestry sector, showcasing the diversity and significance of forest resources.
Educational Significance
FRI serves as a comprehensive training center for forest officers and rangers across India. Its contributions to forestry research have been instrumental in shaping sustainable forest management practices nationwide. The institute’s commitment to education and research continues to attract students and researchers from around the globe.
